The Australian Federal Police (AFP) and the National Rugby League (NRL) are helping equip police in the Pacific Islands with the knowledge and resources to make their communities aware of cyber safety.
A cyber safety 'train the trainer' course is under way on the Australian Gold Coast.
AFP commander Grant Williams says it is vital children in Pacific communities are aware of ways they can be targeted on the internet.
"By all means use the internet, it's a wonderful tool but these are the things that you need to look out for," he said.
"By giving them some of that information and the tools and using the likes of the Pacific Islands' police and in partnership with the NRL, using people that they look up to to spread that message to say that you need to be engaged, but it's also important for parents and carers and teachers and the like to be engaged as well.
"Cyber crime really hasn't reached into the Pacific because their rates of uptake are only now just starting to increase substantially.
"So it's an opportunity to bring the law enforcement officers in from other parts of the Pacific and actually give them the ability to understand the issues and provide the safety tools that they need [so] that they can go back, teach their fellow colleague police officers and then go into the community and reach out to the community and prepare them for the exponential growth of cyber [issues] in the Pacific."
