The Ministry of Education will be distributing its first batch of 600 tablet PCs to selected schools in order to gauge their impact in the classroom.

According to Education Minister, Woravat Au-apinyakul, the Ministry will distribute the tablet PCs to selected Grade 1 and Grade 4 studetns from five pilot schools once it receives the tablets from the Ministry of Information and Communications Technology

The tablet PCs were donated by Sahaviriya OA, a public company, as part of its support to the Government’s one-tablet-per-child policy.

The five schools are Rachawinit School in Bangkok, Anuban Lampang School (Khelang Rat Anuson) in Lampang, Anuban Phangnga School in Phangnga, Sanambin School in Khong Kaen and Srinakharinwirot University Prasarnmit Demonstration School in Bangkok.

“The donated tablet PCs will be handed out to 50 students at Prathom 1 level and another 50 for those at the Prathom 4 level in five pilot schools,” said the minister.

The Woravat Au-apinyakul added that the remaining 100 tablets will be kept in reserve, as the Ministry must consider the readiness of students and teachers, and other related facilities such as an internet connections.

As part of the Ministry’s efforts to gauge the readiness of schools, it will also conduct a study on the potential impact of the devices on pupils. The study will be carried out in collaboration with the Office of the Basic Education Commission and Srinakharinwirot University.

“ The study will focus on children’s eyesight, writing and reading abilities, and learning performance, and its results are expected to be released early next year,” the minister said.
