Fiji's senior citizens are urging the government to introduce a social pension for those aged 70 and above, who are currently denied payments.
The call was made during consultations on the draft National Policy Framework on Ageing and Elderly.
"What we are asking for is an allocation from Government for those who are not on any kind of pensions at all," The Fiji Council of Social Service's Executive Director, Hassan Khan told Radio Australia's Pacific Beat.
"What we're suggesting is that this could be in line with the contribution the government makes yearly to the ex-servicemen's fund. The thinking of the older person is that all older persons, all senior citizens have served the country."
The government is encouraging pensioners to rely on their family members for economic support as the National Provident Fund continues to dwindle.
"Currently, some [pensioners] get over $US60 a week plus $30 food voucher. We feel that this could be regularised and paid across the board to everybody over 70, so this is what we are asking for," Mr Khan said.
