GRADE 12 students will be included in the current government’s free education policy according to Prime Minister Peter O’Neill. O’Neill made the announcement during his visit to Madang last week. He said according to the supplementary budget this year the education sector received K300 million. “The government will be looking to include an additional K400 million by Nov 2 for next year’s budget to almost K700 million for the sector alone,” adding that by 2014 free education would apply to Grade 12 students. O’Neill added that an educated person could make better decisions in life. “Our education system is pushing a lot of young people out before they are fully matured. They need to become matured and adequately trained before stepping out,” he said. Education Minister Theo Zurenuoc thanked the current government for putting education among its key priority areas. He said investing in education could mean a fair distribution of wealth. “This will ensure men and women in remote areas on an island or highland are able to receive that much needed service,” he said. Zurenuoc said the previous government failed to provide sufficient delivery of services to ordinary Papua New Guineans. He said the current government was committed to see that even everyone had access to education, health, transport and law and order services.
