The acting governor of the Northern Marianas approved a new budget for the cash-strapped US commonwealth to avert a shutdown of the government's operations.
But the new funding means a 20 per cent cut on the salaries of civil servants.
Acting Governor Eloy Inos signed Public Law 17-55, the $US 102-million US new budget appropriations for the financially struggling government of the Northern Marianas this fiscal year, 2012.
The new budget allows each government agency to impose a 16-hour cut on civil servants' work hours, every two weeks or per payroll.
Lawmakers, however, who rushed the passage of the budget bill last Friday, exempted Legislative Bureau employees from any austerity work hours.
The civil servants will not get paid for legal holidays.
Acting Governor Inos says he signed the new budget law despite its many problematic provisions so that the government can deliver public service.
He adds it will also relieve civil servants of fear of a possible government shutdown.
