THE United Nations will support the national government in promoting dialogue and peace, resident representative David McLachlan-Karr said. In his address for International Day of Peace, McLachlan-Karr said the UN supported Papua New Guinea in upholding social justice, freedom of the press, women’s empowerment and the rule of law. “Peace-building must begin at home,” he said. “The United Nations in PNG stands ready to assist PNG build a peaceful society by working in a common cause to realise our shared aspirations for dignity, security and opportunity for all.” The International Day of Peace is observed across the world to promote peace and harmony and the resolution of conflict through non-violent means. McLachlan-Karr said there were priorities the government must prioritise to control violence in the country. He said guns control and weapons disposal needed to be addressed properly in order to create and maintain long-lasting peace in the country. “PNG is no stranger to conflict. Competition over land resources and local political tensions often lead to violence,” he said. “These disputes are long-lasting and often involve ‘pay back’ and demand for compensation that weakens human development and progress.” President of the United Nations Association of PNG Peter Donigi is calling on all Papua New Guineans to practice good and peaceful deeds to one another “because it can destroy corruption and lead PNG on the right path to prosperity”.
