The initial phase of the project which will begin next month will involve merging the internet connections of the main city hall and its satellite offices namely General Service Office (GSO) and Heroes Hall.

Dexter Dancel, the city Management Information Systems Unit head told FutureGov Asia Pacific Magazine the move will improve data sharing between the main city hall and the satellite offices which are located one kilometre away from the main hall since file sharing is done online.

Dancel added the project which will costs around Php300,000 (US$7027) will also lessen the money and travel time spent for trouble shooting internet connections in the satellite offices since the support team comes from the main city hall.

“If trouble shooting will be made in the main office, it will only take us five to 10 minutes to solve the problem. Improved internet connection is also very crucial for the GSO because the office has to regularly post reports online as part of a transparency campaign,” he said.

Dancel said there are 70 internet connections running in the city government offices. “The project can expand these into more than 200 internet connections.”

“We are also using four different internet accounts; with this project, those will consolidate into a single account. This move will reduce the money spent for internet and will eliminate redundant internet connections,” he said.

The phase two of the project will involve the consolidation of internet connections of four nearby schools within two kilometre radius which the city government claims to benefit thousands of students.

The completion of both phases of the project is expected to cut monthly bills by Php35,000 (US$820).

Dancel said the proposed annual investment for IT projects in the city is around Php16 million (US$375,000). A large portion of funds is allocated for GIS initiatives, he added.
