More than 30 students from the Faculty of Business Administration, National University of Laos, have learned the promotion of industrial development (especially Small and Medium Enterprises) and the role of foreign direct investment enterprises (FDIE).

The seminar was held at the Laos-Japan Human Resource Development Institute, in Vientiane on 14 February.

Attending the seminar were the Vice-President of the National University of Laos, Dr Saikhong Saynasine, Councillor, Embassy of Japan in Laos, Mr. Shigeru Omori, and the Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar Economic Research, CEO Vietnam Economic Research Institute, Mr. Tatsuya Hoshino.

The seminar is very important for cooperation promotion and enhances the relations and friendship between the two governments and Lao and Japanese people and also welcomes the upcoming 15th founding anniversary of the National University of Laos (NUOL) said Dr Saikhong.

Over the past 15 years, NUOL has played their roles in human resource development, research and technical service along with the promotion and conservation of fine culture of the Lao people, said Dr Saikhong.

He hoped that after the seminar, the trainees will use their knowledge in contribution to the national development, especially SME development.

Mr. Hoshino said that the foreign direct investment would play an important role in the development of SMEs in Laos. Overseas investors have not only invested in factories and businesses but also provided important technology and transfer knowledge to local people. So they can operate for the establishment of factories and businesses.

Laos needs to establish SMEs to produce more goods. It will not only reduce the need for imports, but also create jobs, and when people have jobs they become wealthier, Mr. Hoshino said.

He added that many countries in Asia including Vietnam, previously imported motorbikes but now they were making their own vehicles for domestic market.

Laos should learn lessons from other nations on how to develop SMEs, he advised.
