Telecom Secretary says government aims to make a decision on policy as quickly as possible.

India's government is likely to bring out a policy on the broadband sector by the end of the fiscal year to March 31, Telecom Secretary R. Chandrashekhar said Thursday.

"Our goal is to reach [a decision on the policy] as fast as possible. We will look at all aspects [of the regulator's proposals] over the next two to three weeks," Chandrashekhar told reporters.

Wednesday, India's telecommunications regulator suggested setting up of a broadband network covering the entire country at an investment of INR600 billion ($13.04 billion), as it seeks to take faster data-transfer and Internet services to most villages.

The plan, submitted to the Department of Telecommunications, proposes to offer 75 million broadband connections over the next two years and 160 million connections by 2014, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India said in a statement.
