A senior leader of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Monday encouraged the nation's lawyers to promote law enforcement and social justice.

Zhou Yongkang, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, made the remarks at a meeting in Beijing attended by delegates from China's judiciary organs, bar associations and law firms.

According to the Ministry of Justice, the number of certified lawyers and law firms in China exceeded 166,000 and 15,000, respectively, at the end of 2009.

Zhou called on Chinese lawyers to do more pro bono work for people who need help to improve social fairness.

He encouraged the lawyers to help resolve contradictions and disputes.

Zhou said courts and procuratorial organs should recruit more lawyers as judges and prosecutors.

He also encouraged government departments to select outstanding lawyers through public examinations to work as civil servants.

A relationship of mutual respect, support and supervision should be established between lawyers, prosecutors and police officers, Zhou added.
