Department of Commerce (DoC) has asked Village Development Committee (VDCs) to get mobilised for market monitoring in their area.
The DoC took this move following the rampant sales of date expired and substandard goods in the villages at expensive prices.
Local Development Officer (LDO) of DDCs will act in tandem with VDC secretary and report to the department in accordance to the plan.
The department is also providing trainings to VDC secretaries for market monitoring.
There are 3,912 Village Development Committees across the country.
Local Self-Governance Act 1999 has given business registration and local development tax collection rights to Village Development Committees from small land cottage industries and shopkeepers of their area. As they register business and collect tax, they should take the responsibility of market monitoring also, Thakur said.
The Local Self-Governance Act 1999 has devolved authority to Village Development Committees to take action against substandard goods.
However, VDCs are only inclined towards collecting local development tax rather than implementing the law to regulate market.
