The Australian Trade Minister, Craig Emerson, says Pacific and Asian residents will benefit from increasing trade competition in their regions.

He also said Australia is not afraid to compete with the United States in the Asia Pacific.

President Barack Obama says the United States wants to export more goods into the region because it -s home to some of the fastest growing markets in the world.

Dr Emerson says the President's commitment is good news.

"The total number of jobs increases through the gains of trade, through specialisation," he said.

"So instead of arguing about which country is going to get the jobs, there's more jobs in total.

"And that's good for the poorest people on earth. It's good for our farmer. It's good for the United States."
