Companies Join Forces to Study Cloud Computing in Asia

Eleven companies, including Microsoft, Verizon, Cisco Systems, have formed the Asia Cloud Computing Association, which will work to address concerns related to the use of cloud-based computing in Asian countries.

Just like other parts of the world, there is a great interest in cloud-based computing in Asia, according to the organization. But the Asian cloud computing market is fragmented and faces a wide variety of regulatory and compliance issues, according to Asia Cloud's website.

Also, organizations in Asia have some of the same concerns as enterprises in the rest of the world, particularly around security and service levels, Asia Cloud said.

By addressing these issues, the members hope to spur adoption of cloud-based computing in the Asia region. Initial working groups will, for example, take a closer look at public policy and regulatory issues and security. In 2011, the organization hopes to publish best practices and a cloud-readiness index for end users and suppliers, it said. It will also work with existing standards bodies to evaluate their output and adapt it as appropriate in Asia.

A number of organizations and standards bodies are involved in various aspects of cloud computing, but there is no group that specifically is involved in the Asian market, according to a statement. The list of members also include Alcatel-Lucent, EMC, NetApp, Nokia Siemens Networks, Rackspace and Telenor, it said.

Other hardware vendors, software developers and service providers are invited to join the organization. Asia Cloud is also hoping to attract researchers and academic institutions as well as organizations involved in regulation and policy.
