The private sector is one of the keys to increasing the economic benefits Pacific Islands countries get from their fisheries, according to a new policy brief from the Asian Development Bank.
Whether it is tuna, coastal fisheries, aquaculture or the aqarium trade fish are crucial to future economic growth in the Pacific.
In a new guide to 'increasing returns from fisheries' the Asian Development Bank says experience shows the private sector is better suited to operate the industry and that government involvement often leads to losses.
The ADB says governments can maximize their returns by increasing competition, reducing unnecessary regulation and guarding against corruption.
It recommends against placing conditions on fishing licences or offering subsidies to private sector operators.
