The government is considering the establishment of a task force on agricultural reform headed by Prime Minister Naoto Kan in a bid to beef up the domestic farming industry, government sources said Monday.
The task force is intended to strengthen the international competitiveness of the nation’s agricultural sector to respond to the promotion of trade liberalization such as the Trans-Pacific Partnership free trade agreement, the sources said. The government is expected to decide whether to join negotiations on the multilateral TPP pact prior to the summit of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum slated for Nov 13-14 in Yokohama.
