The rate of household broadband penetration is targeted at 75% by the year 2015, said Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

He said that as of mid-October, household broadband penetration had exceeded 53%, which was more than 50% of the target set for the year end.

"This achievement was made possible due to the efforts and cooperation between the private and public sectors, including the top leadership who emphasised on broadband penetration for all strata of society," he said after chairing a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Broadband Implementation, here Thursday.

Also present was Information, Communication and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim and Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop.

Broadband coverage using various technologies would be widened under the National Broadband Initiative (NBI), Muhyiddin said, adding that more Community Broadband Centres, including the Wifi Village, have been developed to expand the broadband usage to rural or suburban areas.

In an effort to narrow down the digital divide between the urban and rural areas, including in Sabah and Sarawak, one million laptop computers as well as the necessary broadband subscription package have been distributed to students and the low-income group throughout the country.
