The government decided Wednesday to screen 48 projects under eight special budget accounts next week in a bid to find wasteful spending and eke out savings. The decision came at a meeting of the Government Revitalization Unit, where Prime Minister Naoto Kan called for screening all 18 existing special accounts, including the eight for immediate checkup, thoroughly for possible reforms including termination. ‘‘The unit should find all hidden assets or debts in special accounts in a bid to put an end to protracted discussions on problems with these accounts,’’ Kan said at the outset of the meeting. ‘‘We will expose details of special accounts and screen the special account system itself,’’ Government Revitalization Minister Renho said. Forty-two screeners consisting of lawmakers and private-sector experts will be divided into two teams to examine the 48 projects at open sessions in Tokyo for four days from Oct 27. The projects include the construction of large embankments, roads, seaports and airports under the special account for infrastructure development.
