Finance Ministry is distributing the Rf4 million subsidies from 2010 state budget to private media organisations.
State Finance Minister Ahmed Assad said the ministry started distributing the subsidies to three television channels, five radio stations and four daily newspapers from two months before.
The parliamentary finance committee allocated 35 percent of the Rf4 million to private TV channels, 35 percent to radio channels and 15 percent to daily newspapers.
VTV received the highest amount (Rf1,060,000), followed by DhiTV (Rf820,000) and DhiFM (Rf434,000). Rf364,000 was given to 364,000, Rf294,000 to Radio Atoll, Rf252,000 to Faraway FM, Rf246,000 to Haveeru Daily, Rf162,000 to Aafathis, Rf120,000 to FutureTV, Rf102,000 to Miadhu Daily, Rf90,000 to Haama Daily and Rf56,000 to HFM.
Maldives Journalists Association (MJA) in August raised concerns over the delay in distributing the subsidies.
Assad noted that the subsidies are being provided on application.
“We started distributing the subsidies when the media organisations applied for it.Some organisations have already taken the subsidies. We are distributing the amount on the percentage decided by the parliament,” he said.
