Australia's newly appointed Trade Minister, Craig Emerson, says Canberra will use whatever influence it has to get an ambitious outcome from the troubled Doha world trade talks.

The Trade minister will travel to Washington DC and New York next week for introductory talks with US Trade Representative Ron Kirk and other Obama advisers.

He will also speak with India's Commerce and Industry minister, Anand Sharma, and World Trade Organisation Director-General Pascal Lamy.

They are all key players in the troubled Doha Round of world trade talks where Doctor Emerson says Australia still has ambitious hopes.

"It's easy to become despondent and have people tell you that Doha is dead. I don't believe that," he said.

Dr Emerson also says the Trans-Pacific Partnership is a vehicle that seems to offer promise.

His US visit will also put him at a summit on promoting global services trade.

Dr Emerson says he also wants to turn his mind to the planned Pacific free trade deal, PACER-Plus, as soon as possible.

He says, in general, free trade is good for developing countries.

"If we've got a vigorous global trading environment, with as low tariff and other trade barriers as possible then that is great for poverty elimination and it’s great for the developed world as well," he said.
