"With 1.4 million Australians not on the electoral roll earlier this year, we need to do every single thing we can to get bureaucracy and red tape out of the way," GetUp national director Simon Sheikh told ABC News.

The win overturns legislation that requires electoral enrolment paperwork to be signed in order to be valid. In the next election, voters will be able to enrol online.

"Today we've proven that in this country, enrolment can be submitted online," he added.

This marks GetUp's second federal court win in as many weeks, after successfully challenging the electoral roll registration cut-off dates.
