Australia's prime minister Julia Gillard has unveiled a revised climate change policy, promising tougher standards for new power stations.
Ms Gillard has announced that all new power stations will have to meet high standards for their carbon emissions.
New coal fired power stations will also have to be carbon capture and storage ready capable of being retrofitted to capture and store the pollution caused by burning coal.
Ms Gillard says if the Labor party is re-elected, the government will also create a climate change commission to provide evidence and information about climate change science to all Australians.
The Prime Minister also confirmed she will select 150 Australians to advise her on whether there is a consensus on the best way to lower carbon pollution.
"I believe that an issue that is this profound, we need to have a deep and lasting community consensus," she said.
The Prime Minister has also promised to spend $AU1 billion over ten years to connect electricity networks to renewable energy sources.
Ms Gillard says industries would be rewarded for acting immediately to cut their emissions, rather than waiting for an emissions trading scheme to start.
