The government has unveiled a long-term action plan with an aim to produce 38,000 MW of electricity in the next 20 years.
The Ministry of Energy released its 20-Year Hydropower Development Plan Formulation prepared by a taskforce led by former secretary at the Water and Energy Commission Secretariat Kishor Thapa at a programme in Kathmandu Wednesday.
According to the report, the government plans to free the country from load shedding within next five years by producing about 2,000 MW electricity in this period.
18,000 MW out of the proposed 38,000 MW will be produced from three mega-projects, Pancheshwar, Karnali-Chisapani and Saptakoshi within the next 20 years.
Speaking at the programme Thapa said, the action plan will be successful only if the political parties support it fully.
The investment climate and the support from the political parties have to be very favourable for this plan to materialise, said Thapa.
The government had presented a target of producing 25,000 MW electricity within next 20 years during the budget speech last year.
