Azerbaijani Deputy Ecology and Natural Resources Minister Firdovsi Aliyev reported on progress achieved in work
to protect biodiversity and forest protection in the country at the expert seminar on "Investing in biodiversity and increasing support for the green economy," which is part of the environmental conference that passes in the Gabala region of Azerbaijan.

"Azerbaijan has created fertile ground for the adoption of a strategy to implement the extensive measures to protect biodiversity in 2011-2020," Aliyev said.

Gabala hosts a conference on environment organized by the Azerbaijani government and the UNEP will be held in the Gabala region. The event is held in the run-up to the next session of the U.N. General Assembly on Biological Diversity in New York in September.

Aliyev expressed hope that this international event will take decisions that will serve to the global protection of biodiversity.

"It is important to develop a unified action plan for the protection of biodiversity," UN Environmental Programme representative Yvonne Iguero said.

Many countries in Eastern Europe and the Caucasus have already begun to expand its protected area, as there is a need to reduce losses in biodiversity around the world, Iguero said. He noted the importance of investing in environmental protection.

The seminar discusses the biological diversity of Eastern Europe and Central Asia, protection of biological diversity in the regions of Eastern Europe and Central Asia; economics of ecosystems and biodiversity, planning activities on biological diversity at regional and national level.

Deputy Director of the Ministry's Department for Development of protected areas and conservation of biological diversity Hikmat Alizade said the Gabala resolution will be accepted July 7 following the result of the event.

The European Environment Ministers' conference on Biodiversity and the achievement of the Millennium Goals for Development "will be held July 7.
