Under the auspices of UNDESA (Department of Economic and Social Affairs), UNESCAP (Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific) and MOPAS (Ministry of Public Administration and Security), UNPOG successfully organized the International Conference on Good Governance for National Development from 17-18th June at the Millennium Seoul Hilton hotel. The conference has succeeded in drawing attention and providing a platform for collaborative efforts to share knowledge and best practices of Good Governance among over 250 participants from 41 countries.

Major speakers include Minister Augusto B. Santos of National Economic Development Authority of the Philippines, Vice Minister Chang-sub Jung of Ministry of Public Administration of Korea, Mr. Xuan Zengpei, Director of UNESCAP, Mr. Vincenzo Aquaro, Chief of e-Government Branch of UNDESA, Professor B. Guy Peters at the University of Pittsburg and Mr. Soo-gil Park, President of the World Federation of UN Associations of Korea.

The first day of the conference began with an Opening and featured three sessions on the topics of Good Governance and Public Administration for National Development; Cases and Innovations in Good Governance and Public Administration; and International Cooperation for Official Development Assistance and Good Governance. Distinguished professors and practitioners of public administration shared their insights and knowledge through their presentations and participants were provided opportunity to raise their opinion through the Q & A sessions following the presentations.

The second day of the conference consisted of two simultaneous special sessions – a Consultative workshop on e-Cities Network in Asia and the Pacific and the ESCAP/UNDESA Roundtable on ICT Access and e-Government for Achieving the MDGs.

The e-Cities Network in Asia and the Pacific workshop provided a discussion channel among local government leaders and stakeholders from the Asia Pacific countries to exchange diverse and innovative perspectives and set the ground for establishing a regional knowledge network that will facilitate the diffusion of local e-government practices in the region. Around 20 local government leaders from 12 countries of Asia-Pacific region attended the workshop to share their opinions and discuss the direction of local e-Government development in the region.

The ESCAP/UNDESA Roundtable gathered approximately 50 participants and Asia and the Pacific region to discuss key issues on e-Government and reaffirmed its strategic role in achieving the MDGs. UNDESA’s e-government knowledge network in the Asia-Pacific region was introduced to raise awareness of knowledge sharing and to encourage commitment and buy-in from the region.

The two-day conference has provided a platform for engaging multiple groups of stakeholders of public administration in the Asia-Pacific region. It allowed participants to enhance their understanding and interest on Good Governance and helped global scholars and regional practitioners to exchange insights through sharing knowledge and best practices. Global scholars and regional experts exchanged lessons and perspectives on the role of Good Governance for national development and participants benefitted through an enhanced understanding and appreciation of this most timely issue.
