Australia's Resources Minister has told a gathering of miners the government is prepared to negotiate aspects of the resource super profits tax.Resources minister Martin Ferguson set a conciliatory tone in his speech to the Minerals Council's annual conference. Mr Ferguson told them Australia will still be a good place to invest mining dollars. He says the Government won't budge on the 40 per cent tax rate but is willing to negotiate other details.

"Now is the time to talk, to compare forecasts, to argue the case, to resolve issues," he said. He's shrugged off a new study from the Minerals Council which says some new mines would be shelved. The opposition's spokesman, Ian Macfarlane has seized on the study."What we're seeing now is an extraordinarily dangerous period for Australian mining investment." The Opposition has criticised the Prime Minister Kevin Rudd for not attending the conference.
