The Solomon Islands government is reportedly slashing public service spending by as much as 35 per cent.
The Solomon Star says the cuts will apply to rental assistance, electricity and water charges, and thousands of public servants will be affected.
The cuts take effect from today and are aimed at freeing up funds for the government as it heads towards a national general election, in early August.
The report says the cuts are likely to anger public servants, who have recently threatened wide spread strike action, over pay and conditions.
Meanwhile, Governor General, Sir Frank Kabui, is expected to formally announce the Solomon Islands election date, this Friday.
