The World Bank has agreed to assist Nepal with additional amount of Rs 3.01 billion to upgrade the rural road network of the country. Finance Secretary Rameshwore Prasad Khanal and Susan G Goldmark, country director of the World Bank, inked the agreement on behalf of their respective sides. "Nepal's road network and quality are among the lowest in the South Asia region. The headquarters of six of Nepal's 75 districts are yet to be connected by road. Improving these inoperable roads to an all-weather standard and implementing a system of regular maintenance is essential for Nepal's economic growth and social welfare, states a press communiqué issued by the WB. In order to help address these problems, the Rural Access Improvement and Decentralization Project (RAIDP) has been upgrading rural roads in 20 of Nepal's 75 districts since 2005. The new financing will facilitate the project to expand its operations to 10 more districts - Bara, Parsa, Saptari, Tahahun, Gulmi, Arghakhanchi, Dang, Pyuthan, Surkhet and Kanchanpur. The additional financing will help improve a further 550 km of rural roads to all-weather standard.
