Provisional government leader Roza Otunbayeva was appointed Wednesday as the new president of the Central Asian Republic of Kyrgyzstan, DPA reported.
The 59-year-old takes over from ousted president Kurmanbek Bakiyev, who was forced to flee the country after a popular uprising six weeks ago.
Otunbayeva, who has headed the government since Bakiyev's departure, will remain head of state until December 2011, the government announced in the capital, Bishkek.
The new leadership hopes the appointment will restore calm to the impoverished nation, which has seen more than 100 people killed in skirmishes with Bakiyev supporters since his ouster in April.
