Australian Government Lags in Survey

An opinion poll shows most Australian voters think last week's national budget will be good for the economy, but support for the governing Labor Party is still lagging.

A Newspoll in the Australian newspaper shows support for the government and opposition is evenly split on a two-party preferred basis.

The government's primary vote has risen slightly to 37 per cent, but the opposition coalition still leads on 43 per cent.

The survey shows 44 per cent of respondents thought the budget was good, with 31 per cent believing it would be bad for the economy.

The Prime Minister Kevin Rudd remains ahead of the Opposition leader Tony Abbott in the preferred Prime Minister stakes, but the gap is narrowing between those who would prefer Julia Gillard as Labor Leader, with only five points separating the pair.
