Australian Government Steps Up Effort to Defend Mining Super Tax

The Australian government has again defended a planned 40 per cent super tax by saying that mining companies pay a much lower company tax rate than other industries.

The deputy prime minister, Julia Gillard, says Australian mining companies pay an effective company tax rate of only 17 per cent, while multinational companies pay just 13 per cent.

'This is not a fair share,' says Ms. Gillard.

But Mitch Hooke from the Minerals Council says the government is ignoring the royalties that mining companies pay to the states and territories.

'If the government's proposal has merit, I don't know why it has to continue to resort to spin,' says Mr Hooke.

The resources minister, Martin Ferguson, has left open the possibility of tailoring the new tax to differentiate between minerals.
