The Australian Government has sweetened its national health care plan with more money for aged care, but is still meeting with resistance from the states. The government wants the states and territories to sign up to its health plan at a meeting next week.It has announced a $US689 million boost for aged care services. The Minister for Ageing, Justine Elliott, says it will fund 5,000 extra aged care places.
"This will really ease the pressure on our hospital system," she said. The New South Wales Premier Kristina Keneally has welcomed the aged care money, but still wants more information about the overall health plan."We won't sign up to a plan that puts New South Wales taxpayers and families in a disadvantaged position," she said.Ms Elliott says the bulk of the extra aged care money is contingent on the states signing up.
