Muscat -

A new e-gate system, which scans fingerprints and boarding passes, has begun functioning for passengers departing from Muscat International Airport.

The automated immigration clearance system, like the previous one, comprises four terminals and follows a similar procedure, with the boarding pass scanner being the notable addition.

Passengers have to first get their ID cards scanned, as earlier, for the gates to open. Then, their fingerprints are scanned before an automated voiceover asks them hold up their boarding passes to be screened on a scanner to the right.

However, the old system is still in operation for passengers arriving at the airport. “What strikes you first about the new system is the larger blue screen,” said a passenger who used the system on Thursday on his way out to Mumbai.

“Since it was the first time for me, there was a bit of confusion in the beginning about where to insert the ID card. There was another surprise in store after my fingerprints were scanned. The automated voice asked to hold up my boarding pass for the code to be scanned on another screen; there was a message too that flashed on the screen regarding this.

“Thankfully, there was an official at hand to guide passengers through the system.”

The passenger, who returned to Muscat on Saturday morning, confirmed that the old system was still in operation at the arrivals section.
