South Africa: Improved Health Services as the Princess Community Lauds Extended Clinic Hours

Her sentiments are echoed by Kgalalelo Polokeng, who says “the extended hours have brought great relief to this community. We are now able to bring our children to the clinic when we get home from work. It is also good that they now operate on Sundays too. The increased staff was also a good idea and it is good to see that they are well trained on working with people. They are friendly and always ready to help, we are also grateful for the spacious waiting room”.

The extension of hours at City clinics was initiated by Executive Mayor, Cllr Herman Mashaba. This week, he was back at Princess Clinic to mark a year since the hours were extended. “Since the extension of operating hours, this facility has been able to provide healthcare to over 7000 more people. These are people who at times were forced to choose between work and their health, taking time of studies or accessing healthcare. We hope these extended hours have made a big difference in the lives of the people,” said Mayor Mashaba.

Clinic Manager, Stella Uys says the extended hours have attracted even more people to the clinic. “Since the extended operating hours we have had more people coming in after hours, something they have been longing for. We are now busiest between 16:00 and 19:00. However, some community members have raised concerns that the area surrounding the clinic is too dark to walk at night. It is for this reason that they avoid coming in late.”

The operating hours at the clinic were extended by seven hours on weekdays and by five and half hours on weekends, much to the benefit of the community.
Moreover, a social worker is now at hand to render the much needed social development services, by providing psycho-social support, skills development, food security and help in the fight against substance abuse.

Renovations were done at the clinic in October 2017. These included the extension of the waiting area, throughway to ablution facilities for the public, improved lighting and the installation of a state-of-the-art generator.

Other clinics with extended operating hours are Freedom Park, Hikinsile, Randburg, Zandspruit and Albert Street.
