The Department of Basic Education and Imperial Holding have partnered to educate learners about road safety.

Minister Motshekga encouraged learners to wear a seatbelt when they are in car.

As part of her department’s programme for road safety, she said school patrols play an important role in making sure that learners are safe.

Imperial Holdings CEO Mark Lamberti said road safety was a major concern for his company.

The Imperial “Safe Scholar” Programme was launched in 2011 and has to date reached has reached 1039 schools and 1 026 985 learners in primary schools. In addition, it has distributed 48 000 sashes to aid in learner visibility while they walk to and from school on the road.

The organisation has also started a child seat programme.

“We have collected car seats and we will distribute them to people who cannot afford them,” he said.

As the school holidays are approaching, Minister Motshekga called on parents to create safe playing spaces for their children.

“When schools close, every parent must make sure that their child has a book, they must read. They should not watch TV the whole day because they get bored.

“They must read for pleasure so that when they come back from holidays they are still fresh,” Minister Motshekga said.
