The commemoration on 9 August 2016 will be held under the theme “Women united in moving South Africa forward”, which reaffirms government’s commitment to strive for a society free from all forms of discrimination and to move South Africa forward by raising awareness about the critical role women play in the country’s socio-economic development.

“The empowerment of women is an integral part of social cohesion and nation building,” Cabinet said.

A public education programme will be undertaken with a build-up of activities in all provinces leading to Women’s Day.

The main Women’s Day event will take place at the Union Buildings in Pretoria.

The day will start with a parade from Bosman Station to the Lilian Ngoyi Square, where President Jacob Zuma will open the Women’s Living Monument.
