The AU summit in
January 2015 elected Tolly S. Mbwette from Tanzania a President, and Paulo
Horácio de Sequeira e Carvalho from Angola a Vice President of the PAU Council,
and the summit directed the AU Commission to constitute the broader membership
of the Council.
The members, who serve a three-year term at the
PAU Council, include representatives of the AU Commission, member states,
regional economic communities (RECs), the University Rectorate, staff,
students, host universities, partners, academia, the private sector, the
African diaspora and civil society.
The Council is also mandated to perform important
oversight roles on academic activities, university management and
administration, in addition to representing and furthering the general
interests of the University, according to AU.
Tolly S. Mbwette, PAU President, told Xinhua
that the inaugural meeting of the PAU Thursday is the beginning of the
operationalization of the structure of the Pan African University which was
approved by AU.
The launch of the Council signifies the
commitment to the efforts made to revitalizing higher education in Africa, said
He also noted that PAU encourages high level
research and innovation as well as collaboration among Africans towards
building capacity in critical areas of development.
AU cooperates and is able to mobilize resources
for the project from the African Development Bank (AfDB), the European Union
Commission as well as with different governments while there is expectation
from other partners for assistance, according to the President.

development of institutions of excellence in key areas of science, technology,
innovation, humanities, social sciences and governance, which would constitute
the bedrock of an African pool of world-class higher education and research,
