The AU summit in January 2015 elected Tolly S. Mbwette from Tanzania a President, and Paulo Horácio de Sequeira e Carvalho from Angola a Vice President of the PAU Council, and the summit directed the AU Commission to constitute the broader membership of the Council.

The members, who serve a three-year term at the PAU Council, include representatives of the AU Commission, member states, regional economic communities (RECs), the University Rectorate, staff, students, host universities, partners, academia, the private sector, the African diaspora and civil society.

The Council is also mandated to perform important oversight roles on academic activities, university management and administration, in addition to representing and furthering the general interests of the University, according to AU.

Tolly S. Mbwette, PAU President, told Xinhua that the inaugural meeting of the PAU Thursday is the beginning of the operationalization of the structure of the Pan African University which was approved by AU.

The launch of the Council signifies the commitment to the efforts made to revitalizing higher education in Africa, said Mbwette.

He also noted that PAU encourages high level research and innovation as well as collaboration among Africans towards building capacity in critical areas of development.

AU cooperates and is able to mobilize resources for the project from the African Development Bank (AfDB), the European Union Commission as well as with different governments while there is expectation from other partners for assistance, according to the President.

The strategic objective of the PAU is the development of institutions of excellence in key areas of science, technology, innovation, humanities, social sciences and governance, which would constitute the bedrock of an African pool of world-class higher education and research, said AU.

This would usher in a new generation of African leaders with capacity to optimally harness available human and material resources towards a peaceful, prosperous and integrated Africa, added the pan-African bloc.

While having a number of institutes hosted in different countries of the continent, the headquarters of the Pan African University will be located in Cameroon, according to the PAU Council President. Enditem
