The Premier emphasised the importance of maintaining relations with Middle East and Asian (MEA) countries, in order to extend the growth of Gauteng.

“Gauteng is the gateway to the African continent, and to Southern African Development Countries, (SADC) region. We are greatly encouraged by the performance of our regional economy; the foreign direct investment reached an estimated 43 billion US dollars up from 37 US dollars in 2012. Going forward, regional GDP is expected to increase to 5.3 % in 2014, rising to 5.4 in 2015, reaching 5.5 in 2016,” he added.

Premier Makhura added that Gauteng is located in a growing region of the African continent, and it currently contributes more than 35% of the country’s GDP and 11% of Africa’s GDP.

In positioning Gauteng into a globally competitive economy, Premier Makhura said the provincial government has ambitious plans to grow the Gauteng economy into a two-trillion rand economy.

This will be achieved through attracting a range of skilled labour and investors eager to contribute to the growth of the economy.

He also said areas such as Ekurhuleni had been ear-marked for manufacturing investment because of the growth of the aerotropolis which will increase the ease of access and mobility for business.

While the Johannesburg metro was the financial and business hub of Gauteng, the City of Tshwane has been designated for the automotive industry and other knowledge-based sectors.

In support of Modernisation of the economy, MEC for Economic Development Lebogang Maile urged the investors to also invest in the Township economy as it has so far shown to have great potential to maximise the economy of Gauteng.
