South Africa: Assistive Devices Donated to Learners with Disabilities at Filadelfia Secondary School

“What you dream and believe can be achieved … these assistive devices will add independency (and make you feel better),” said the deputy minister.

Excited learners were overwhelmed with the donations. With tears of joy and a thankful heart, they received the wheelchairs that would change their lives forever.

The donation, which is supported by the department, is a continuation of ACSA’s ten-year-old Assistive Device Donation Programme. To date, it has benefited more than 10 000 people with disabilities.

As the country celebrates South Africa’s 20 years of democracy, the department continues to work hand-in-hand with ACSA to ensure the company fulfils its Corporate Social Investment by providing assistive devices for people with disabilities.

Filadelfia Secondary School for the Disabled and Muscular Dystrophy South Africa cater for individuals with disabilities, including muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy and spina bifida.

Deputy Minister Bogopane-Zulu said the department is proud to be part of the private-public partnerships, like the one it has with ACSA.

“The success of a partnership of this nature can only be felt through the impact it has on its beneficiaries. More than 10 000 people who have benefited from ACSA’s Assistive Device Donation Programme have been able to find new ways to test their abilities as they become more self-sufficient,” she said.

ACSA Group Specialist Stakeholder Management, Ndiphiwe Ntuli thanked government departments for partnering with the company.

“Providing means of mobility for people with disabilities has helped to create a barrier-free environment … for people with disabilities…”

Ntuli also asked learners to inform them if they knew of any disabled learner who was at home and not attending school because they didn’t have the assistive devices.

“No child must sit at home because they don’t have access to assistive devices, if you know them, let us know,” Ntuli said.
