During the past 20 years, KwaZulu-Natal has built more than 500 000 houses of the more than 3.6 million homes built nationally, since the advent of democracy.

In addition, more than 89 000 housing opportunities through serviced sites have been provided during the past two decades.

According to Baloyi, the R110 million KwaDube Rural Housing Project is almost halfway nearing completion with more than 705 houses completed and will benefit 1 500 beneficiaries.

This Tuesday hand-over of houses in KwaDube comes a week after MEC Pillay handed over more houses to beneficiaries at Bhekeshowe in the neighbouring uMlalazi Municipality.

Baloyi said the provincial department is spending close to R500 million in housing provision projects using different policy instruments ranging from in-situ, slums clearance, informal settlements upgrade, Community Residential Units (formerly single sex hostels) to rural and affordable housing projects.
“These half-a billion projects are in different phases ranging from approved, pre-feasibility, planning to under construction and those that have been completed waiting transfers for project close-out purposes,” he said.
