Displaying positive attitude towards patients, colleagues and the general public also counts in favour of the nominees.

Other factors that are considered include effective management of the work environment, contribution towards team work and upliftment of communities.

Amongst the nominees in the category of doctors and dentists, there is a dentist based at Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital, who for the past 18 years has diligently serviced the community. She goes the extra mile to accommodate even school health dental services and participates in oral health outreach programmes.

There is also the first black female specialist paediatric surgeon in the country, who is based at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital.

She was instrumental in the establishment of a programme called Ezabantwana, which has impacted positively in the reduction of long waiting times for surgery on babies.

The paediatric surgical department dedicates a week every year where marathon elective operations are done over and above the routine and emergency operations.

In the Cecelia Makiwane Nurses Recognition Awards, one of the nominees is a professional nurse based at Weskopies Psychiatric Hospital.

She has displayed a high sense of duty by going the extra mile in performing her duties and assisting other units where the staff compliment is low.

She is always readily available to take charge of the hospital over weekends and night duty when required. She is also a champion for patients’ rights and the Batho Pele principles.

Other categories are Allied Health Medical Professions, Auxiliary Clinical Support; Administration; General Support and Managers.
