Deputy Director of the government owned Liberia Telecommunication Company (LITELCO), has attributed the lack of manpower in Liberia as the cause for Liberia's backwardness in technology. According to Mr. Paul Muah, because Liberia lacks engineers, they are paying foreign national to handle technical activities at Libtelco.

Speaking recently at the Center for the Exchange of Intellectual Opinions (CEIO) in Monrovia, Mr. Muah disclosed that LITELCO is about to install a wireless internet system at the top of the Library building on the main campus of the university of Liberia.

The LITELCO's boss said Liberians need to develop themselves if they are to overcome the challenges of lack of technological information.

He also said that plans are underway for the decentralization of LITELCO communication system to other parts of the country.

Mr. Muah pointed out that because of the too many updated books at the state owned university, they (LITELCO) has entered an agreement of wireless internet service to make information accessible for the UL.

Mr.Muah emphasized the need for infrastructure development, noting, with LITELCO's operation in the country, technology is about to provide a level playing field in the country.

"I want technology to change in Liberia and make information and communication affordable for every Liberian with the help of the 3G platform broad band", he added.

He said to mitigate the importation of experts LITELCO has sent people in Kenya and Ghana for training in information Technology (IT) so that they can come and teach others. He furthered that technology at its development stage is not cheap for which their internet service is a bit expensive.

The LITELCO deputy boss stated that LITELCO internet is 21cents per hour and very much unlimited. The deputy LITELCO director also said that because LITELCO is a government entity and not actually for profit making, costs for both local and international calls are lesser than the others GSM companies.

He also disclosed that tablet computers in the form of telephone from LITELCO will soon be on the market in December.
