The Community of Learning Principals (CoLP), an initiative established in June 2011, is a value added platform which facilitates meaningful information sharing between educators and business leaders. The initiative was originally founded by the Faculty of Economic and Management Services of the University of the Western Cape (UWC) in partnership with Symphonia for South Africa and the South African Principals Association (SAPA) and with financial support from the MySchool MyVillage MyPlanet fundraising programme. To date hundreds of Western Cape principals have attended the free capacity building workshops, going back to their schools inspired and equipped with relevant information and skills which they in turn re-invested in their schools and fellow teachers.
“I would recommend to all principals to attend CoLP sessions. This is a wave of positive change taking place within our schools, a necessary approach to turn around the decay and mediocrity prevailing. CoLP has proven to be a viable vehicle for genuine transformation within our schools. Concepts such as placing schools at the centre of the community and forging partnerships with the business community amongst others, are indeed recipes for success in educational change”, says Imtiaz Adams, Principal of Surrey Primary School in Athlone.
The third CoLP session for this year will take place on Tuesday 28 May and offers a choice of three topics. Arthur Preston, headmaster, blogger and educational speaker will discuss practical tips and ideas around the creation of a culture of innovation in teaching practice, staff learning and curriculum. Gavin Keller, a leading neuro-learning practitioner, will address cultural bias in human behaviour and presenters Ridwan Samodien and Andre Pretorius will talk about The Language of Possibility.
MySchoolMyVillageMyPlanet, continues to sponsor all the 2013 sessions to ensure that local school principals and deputy principals can attend free of charge. UWC continues to support the initiative by sponsoring venues and resources.
The CoLP initiative, with the participation of principals and business carry the torch for Western Cape schools to fully embrace a culture of learning and are taking giant strides, positively impacting future generations in the establishment of an even more integrated society.
