The Year of the Artisan programme seeks to promote being artisan as a career of choice to South Africa’s youth within the post-school education and training system, raise awareness about the profession by skilling existing artisans through the recognition of prior learning (RPL) as well as to highlight skills development opportunities that are available in the field.

Following the official launch of the programme in February this year, Manana said one of the key priorities of government was to develop qualified artisans in an effort to support the country’s economy, particularly in light of the successful implementation of the strategic infrastructure projects (SIPs) that were announced by President Jacob Zuma in his state of the nation address last year. The SIPs include the building of roads, schools, universities, harbours, power stations and other socioeconomic infrastructure.

Manana said: “We want authorities in our FET colleges to encourage the youth to enrol for artisanship. Our mission is for the youth to be trained in artisanship so that we can close the gap on the critical shortage of artisans.”
