Public consultations and hearings were conducted in December 2011 at the City Hall in Bloemfontein and the name of Bram Fischer was endorsed. On 29 August 2012, the South African Geographical Names Council (SAGNC) recommended the proposed name of Bram Fischer International Airport to the Minister for approval.
The Honourable Minister of Arts and Culture, Mr Paul Mashatile, approved and gazetted the renaming of Bloemfontein International Airport to Bram Fischer International Airport on the 2 November 2012.
The MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Mr Dan Kgothule, wishes to thank Ms. Dorcas Khewa of Chris Hani in Bloemfontein for submitting the proposal of name change of the airport on 10 October 2011.
The official launch and re-naming ceremony is planned to take place before the end of the year.
Minister Mashatile also approved the change of the name of Petrus Steyn town in Nketoana Municipality to Mamafubedu.
