The theme of the Conference is Embracing Social and Environmental Change: The Influence and Role of Tourism, focusing on the influence of tourism and its role in shaping environmental and social change. Some 50 participants are taking part in the four-day event. Among them: academics in the fields of tourism, economic development, management and marketing, senior government officials involved in tourism planning and development, researchers in climate change and environment, industry consultants, managers of tourism establishments, research students and NGOs.
The Conference has a four-fold objective. It will not only bring together researchers in the field of sustainability and tourism but also enable them to share their findings and knowledge in an international perspective. Moreover, the Conference will act as a thinking and discussion forum on sustainability and tourism issues. Finally, in a bid to make tourism and its related activities sustainable, proposals will be put forward to stakeholders in the area of sustainable tourism.
Participants will be able to discuss and share the latest theories and practices on the sub-themes relating to sustainable development, climate change and poverty reduction. The conference will also provide the opportunity to network and enable local researchers to interact with internationally renowned researchers.
The International Tourism Sustainability Conference will be co-chaired by Professor Andrew Holden, Director for the Institute for Tourism Research (INTOUR), University of Bedfordshire, UK, and Professor Ramesh Durbarry, Head of School of Sustainable Development and Tourism, UTM. Keynote speakers include Professor Simon Milne, Director of the New Zealand Tourism Research Institute, Auckland University of Technology; Professor Peter Burns, Professor of Tourism and Development and Director of the Centre for Tourism Policy Structures, University of Brighton, UK; and Dr Joel Sonne, Director of Policy and Planning, Ministry of Tourism, Ghana.
The event is expected to position the UTM and its School of Sustainable Development and Tourism locally, regionally and internationally as well as enhance collaboration with local, regional and international universities.
