The conference will provide an opportunity for Education Ministers in the Commonwealth to review progress towards achieving the Internationally Agreed Goals (IAGs), reflect on emerging educational issues and challenges and to consider the future of education beyond 2015 when the IAG period is due to conclude, the Minister of Education and Human Resources, Dr Vasant Bunwaree, said at a press conference in Port Louis yesterday.
The triennial CCEM enables Education Ministers of member States to discuss key education issues in the Commonwealth in relation to a specified theme, and to identify areas for action for the next three years. It is the most important meeting in the Commonwealth education calendar focused on sharing knowledge and good practices in the education sector.
The theme of the conference is “Education in the Commonwealth: bridging the gap as we accelerate towards achieving the internationally agreed goals” which are the Millennium Development Goals and Education for All goals.
Within the context of the 18 CCEM, there will be four parallel events, namely: a Teachers’ Forum at the Rajiv Gandhi Science Centre, Bell Village; a Youth Forum at the Mahatma Gandhi Institute auditorium, Moka; a Stakeholders’ forum at the SVICC, Pailles; and a Post Secondary/Higher Education Leaders’ forum at the Octave Wiehé Auditorium, University of Mauritius, Réduit. These parallel events will be held on 28 and 29 August 2012 will culminate in the formulation of respective statements that would be presented at the closing ceremony of the Ministerial meeting.
During the 18CCEM, an exhibition will be held with a view to allowing Governments, NGO’s, agencies, universities and the private sector to showcase their work in Commonwealth Education.
Furthermore, the Commonwealth Secretariat has also launched the third edition of the Commonwealth Education Good Practice Awards 2012. The competition recognises and celebrates institutions, civil societies and individuals in Commonwealth countries who have brought in innovative practices in education.
