TELECOM Namibia yesterday launched its Speedlink, a spin-off of the West Africa Cable System (WACS), with pomp and ceremony in Windhoek.
Speedlink will be a "game changer" on the internet service scene, Telecom Namibia managing director Frans Ndoroma promised. The new product offers "faster connections, higher bandwidths and more choices" and is suitable for anything from homes to businesses.
"This is the most exciting product that Telecom Namibia has ever offered and we are confident that it will help to significantly stimulate the growth of broadband services all over the country," Ndoroma said.
The 17 200 km, US$650 million WACS submarine cable was recently switched on in Yzerfontein in South Africa and has provided Telecom Namibia with the capacity to offer Speedlink.
Officially launching the new product yesterday, Information and Broadcasting Minister Joël Kaapanda said "broadband is Namibia's non-negotiable passport to the future".
"It is believed that broadband is the next tipping point, the next truly transformational technology. Broadband is an economic game changer, allowing nations to do old things better, and to introduce new things that are not yet even imagined," Kaapanda said.
He said initiatives like e-health, e-governance, e-banking and e-education are now within Namibia's reach.
