Post and Telecommunications Minister Dr. Fredrick Norkeh, has disclosed the arrival here and installation new mailing equipment valued at US$90,000. Speaking at a news conference yesterday, the Post Master General said since the 14 years of protracted civil unrest, the Ministry has never experienced such major transformation. Dr. Norkeh said through the ministry's budgetary allotment, he ordered for a 40 feet container of equipment from the United States for the country's mailing system, including 10,000 travel boxes, several stamps, 30 drop boxes, scale digital, security cameras and postal gears, amongst others. He said apart from the new technology introduced in the mailing system, the ministry has revamped all sectors, including installation of cameras throughout the building. "Because of the new method put into place, confidence has once been restored to the mailing system. I am pleased to announce for the first time since the wars, the United States government through its Ambassador Madam Linda Thomas Greenfield, told us that they place confidence in the mailing system; today, we are handling cargos. This is to tell the world the level of progress", he told reporters. The Post Master General noted that since he took over the ministry, cases of mail tempering have reduced by 80 percent, suggesting that the security of mails is getting stronger unlike the past, saying "The charge of mail theft is equivalent to theft of property and the punishment is severe. In fact, we have fired about five employees for such devilishly act." He also revealed that the ministry has constructed new postal offices in Lofa and Sinoe counties, while Margibi County is nearing completion. "We are also targeting other counties for the construction of various postal offices, but in the next fiscal budget, Dr. Norkeh concluded.
