“We are consolidating our economic infrastructure; we have transparent and legally sound licensing arrangements, and investors are guaranteed security of tenure,” the Deputy President said during his toast remarks on Wednesday.

Motlanthe also appealed to investors in the mining sector. He addressed concerns raised from talks of mine nationalisation. Motlanthe assured business leaders that government was committed to transparency in mining, which is the backbone of South Africa’s economy.

"Our opportunities for mutual partnerships are almost limitless, considering [the] abundant resources we have beneath and above our soil. Let us make the best of it together," he said.

He said economic growth was limited by slow infrastructure investments,  but the tide was turning.

He also thanked Britain for its support during the 2010 FIFA World Cup, which he said painted a positive picture of South Africa. He promised to do the same when London hosted the 2012 Olympics and bid for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Motlanthe is joined in London by Mineral Resources Minister Susan Shabangu, Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan and International Relations and Co-operation Deputy Minister Ebrahim Ebrahim.

Motlanthe will address the Economist's Emerging Markets Conference, where he is expected to talk about South Africa's plans to grow the economy by attracting foreign investment. – BuaNewE
