The public Sector Must Modernise to Avoid Data Disaster

According to Icomm, a UK provider of pro-active IT services and solutions, the public sector are risking data disaster and wasting money by failing to progress to cloud-based back ups.

Icomm's research has found that, of 121 of its public sector customers, a staggering 73% still use old fashioned tape back-ups, with 26% of those failing to back up all their data as their tapes are at capacity.

Icomm have warned that using traditional tape back-ups as opposed to cloud-based alternatives could leave a huge gap in their disaster recovery plans. Tapes, which are generally increasingly being replaced by cloud-based storage, are more prone to failure and are more subject to human error than the most modern systems.

Icomm’s Ian Callens, said: “The words ‘disaster recovery’ usually conjure up images of fire, theft and terrorism but a simple server failure is much more likely and can be just as disruptive.

“Our new findings suggest that many public sector organisations would not only lose data but also face delays of several days to restore their back-ups if they had an IT failure.”

The Icomm data also showed that those using tape back-up could be wasting up to 61 hours a year on managing their back-up systems.

Ian Callens continues: “Our estimates suggest that public sector organisations could save £2,500 a year over a three year period by switching to a cloud-based back up system and cutting down on wasted admin time.”
